Description: [The following description is taken from the By-Laws of the University Senate.] This committee shall continuously review University policies and practices relating to tenure, academic freedom, work loads, rank and promotion, remuneration, retirement, and other matters affecting the faculty and shall propose any desirable expression of Senate opinion on these matters, including proposals to the Trustees for modifications in their rules and regulations on these matters. The committee shall include two undergraduate students and one graduate student. It shall make an annual report at the November meeting of the Senate.

General Education Oversight Committee

Description:     GEOC deals with the development and implementation of the new University General Education requirements. This committee in concerned with setting and regulating the ways in which undergraduate courses qualify or fulfill university requirements and well as (some) attention to the requirements of individual schools and colleges. Additionally, GEOC is concerned with whatever measurement is to be done to evaluate the undergraduate student body (such as the SAILS evaluation which seeks to measure undergraduate research aptitude and Ňinformation literacyÓ –the SAILS project began in GEOC.)

Description: [The following description is taken from the Graduate SchoolŐs website detailing the responsibilities of the Graduate Faculty Council www.grad.uconn.edu/faculty/gfc.html.) The Graduate Faculty Council is the legislative body of the Graduate School. It establishes academic policy for graduate education, except for those areas reserved to the Board of Trustees, to the University Senate, or to the faculties of other colleges and schools. The 60 members, representing specific content areas derived from constituent Fields of Study, are elected to serve three-year terms. The membership includes two voting student members chosen by the Graduate Student Senate. The President, the Provost, the Vice Provost and Dean of the Graduate School, and certain other administrative officers of the Graduate School are nonvoting ex officio members. The Council, representing the Graduate Faculty at large, exercises legislative authority in such areas as admissions criteria, curricular and degree requirements, new course approval, academic program review, and the like.

Description: The University Senate normally meets once a month from 4:00pm to 6:00pm on Mondays. An academic policy making body, the University Senate largely deals with Undergraduate Courses and Requirements, but has covered issues such as new construction projects and the Academic Calendar, which affects nearly all aspects of campus life. Additionally, the SenateŐs focus on undergraduate education is not without impact on the graduate community. For example, in the spring of 2007 the University Senate debated an attendance proposition that would have certainly affect how we teach our courses. Numerous other university committees (on which graduate students serve) ultimately answer to the University Senate.

Windham Region Transit District (WRTD)

Description: [The following description was taken from WRTDŐs own website detailing its history and mission: http://www.wrtd.net/about.html#history]. The Windham Region Transit District was formed in accordance with Chapter 103a of the Connecticut General Statutes in 1979 with the towns of Windham, Mansfield, and Coventry voting to join. Subsequently, Ashford, Hampton and Columbia joined the district. Representatives from these six towns meet quarterly, or more frequently, to act on matters necessary in managing the district's affairs. WRTD's service area, however, includes all ten towns of the Windham Region (Ashford, Chaplin, Columbia, Coventry, Hampton, Lebanon, Mansfield, Scotland, Willington and Windham.) Dial-A-Ride began serving the region in the fall of 1976. WRTD became the primary funding source of Dial-A-Ride in July of 1981, providing federal and state funds to subsidize the service. The Storrs-Willimantic Bus fixed route service began operations in October of 1981. The Willimantic City Bus fixed route service began operations in March of 1989. The Route 32 Commuter Bus service between Willimantic, Norwich and Foxwoods Resort Casino began in April of 2000. While all WRTD services are open to the public, the Route 32 Commuter Bus Service is particularly intended to help individuals access employment and employment-related activities. Funds to pay for WRTD's services come from the Federal Transit Administration, the Connecticut Department of Transportation, the ten towns of the Windham Region, fares, donations, and advertising revenue.
